The Noble Quran as a Cure (Shifaa)

Quran as a Cure

In Arabic the literal meaning of the word “Ash-Shifaa” is simple, a cure, remedy or healing from a sickness. Our Lord the Supreme called the Glorious Quran “Shifaa” in many Verses and in different places in His Noble Book:

“O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Quran, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, – a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.” (Yunus 10:57).

Hence, the Quran is a healing for the diseases that afflict the heats of human kinds; one must be aware that those – such as doubt and suspicion in one’s faith, filth of shirk, hypocrisy, jealousy, malice and other similar filths. – are ultimately more harmful and destructive than any disease that afflicts a human’s body.

Allah (SWT) says in another Verse:

“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.” (Al-Isra 17L82).

This Verse means that the Holy Quran completely is both a cure and a mercy for the believers. This Verse describes that the Quran is a cure on the whole for the diseases of the hearts. But even though the Quran is a healing for diseases of the heart, it can be a healing for physical diseases as well. Many scholars say that, in the above-mentioned Verse, the Holy Quran is described as being a cure for both spiritual and physical diseases. Their explanation is supported by authentic Ahadith in which it is mentioned that reciting specific Verses of the Holy Quran can have the effect of healing certain physical sickness. Abu Saeed Al-Khudri narrated:

“Some of the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) came across a tribe of Bedouins that did not entertain them, nor behave hospitably with them. Their leader became ill, and they came to us saying: ‘Do you have any medicine?’ We said: ‘Yes. But you did not entertain us nor have us as guests so we will not do anything until you give us something.’ Then they gave some sheep for that.” He said: “So a man from us began reciting the Opening of the Book (Surat Al-Fatihah) and he was cured. So when we came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) we mentioned that to him, He said: ‘How did you know that it was a Ruqyah?’ And he did not mention any prohibition against it, and he said: ‘Eat, and assign me a share among you from them (the sheep).’” (At-Tirmidhi 2064).

The aforementioned Hadith highlights the opinion of the scholars and their interpretation that Quran is not only a cure of spiritual diseases but it can cure the physical diseases too. Al-Fatihah, the opening chapter of the Quran, has been described by the Prophet (PBUH) as the ‘Chapter of Healing’. Allah (SWT) also described the Quran as a Healing. Moreover, Al-Fatihah, has rightly been described as the Essence of the Quran.

Allah (SWT) said:

“Say, “It is, for those who believe, guidance and a cure.” (Fussilat 41:44).

All above mentioned Verses and Ahadith indicate that Quran is a cure and a healing for all spiritual and physical ailments. How the Quran acts as a healing for the spiritual diseases is clear. Spiritual diseases are two types:

  1. False faiths and beliefs.

This is the worst form of false beliefs involves having incorrect beliefs concerning Allah (SWT), His Prophets (AS), the Day of Resurrection and the Divine Preordainment. The Glorious Quran contains in it the truth concerning all of these diseases and issues; moreover, it refutes those who hold false beliefs regarding them.

  1. Wicked acts and manners.

The Quran lists evil deeds and manners, indicates why they are evil, and guides people to their opposites, to good deeds and praise-worthy manners. (Accordingly, it is apparent how the Quran, through information and reminders and commands, acts as a healing for spiritual diseases.)

Concerning how Quran acts as a cure for physical ailments? It is also clear and simple, if one seeks blessings from it when one recites it, then that has the effect of warding off diseases and sickness.

We can expand the scope of its meaning even further, just as the Quran is a cure for diseases of the heart, soul, and body. It is also a cure for those illness that are causing our societies and communities to spoil nowadays. Such ailments can, among other things, be political, economic, or societal in nature. We all, as a society, are afflicted with numerous diseases, and we must look to the Book of Allah (SWT) in order to cure all of our miseries, and not just a stomachache, headache or other similar sickness. One of the ways in which the Holy Quran is magnificent and great is that it contains in it a remedy for all our temporal worldly problems just like false beliefs, base manners, physical diseases, as well as all types of social problems.
