The Need for Islamic Education

The Need for Islamic Education

The acquisition of knowledge has been given the utmost importance in Islam. Knowledge whether it be Islamic or worldly (e.g. scientific) is appreciated in Islam. In fact, the first revelation in Islam was regarding reading.

9اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ – 6:1

“Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who created”

The importance of learning has been highlighted in the Quran multiple times and in the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

“Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim”

(Sunan Ibn Majah: Hadith 224)

A Beginner's Guide To Islam.

1). Leading a life of Virtue and Happiness

The most basic and important reason for attaining an Islamic education is to avoid a life of sin and to base our life on the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. How can we please Allah سبحانه وتعالى if we are not aware of the actions required? It’s true that the foundation of Islam is based on its five pillars and as Muslims, we are aware of those but there is soo much more to Islam.

It’s not just about receiving Allah’s blessings and attaining success in the world hereafter but Islam is a code of life. It teaches us how to lead a successful life in this world too! It touches upon social, economic, physiological, behavioral knowledge and so much more. Most of us aren’t even aware of these aspects, we end up doing and adopting the ways of the world which more than often are not the way of Islam.

It’s not only a successful life but a peaceful life that can be led from following Islam. Peace and success are the most sought after by people and the answer to it lies in Islam. If we were to learn about Islam from a young age and make it as important as academic knowledge, we would be able to attain a better life and attain the path to self-fulfillment.

2). Learn from History

We have all heard the saying that history often repeats itself, that’s what makes studying it so important. Islamic history is extremely rich and full of stories and incidents from which we can learn valuable lessons and morals.

Learn from History

The history of Islam covers an expanse of over 1500 years and highlights the rise and fall of many different civilizations.

For example from the stories of the Prophets (peace be upon them), we get to learn valuable lessons and morals. One story is of Hazrat Yusuf (AS) and his brothers through which we get to know about the sin of jealousy and also the virtue of forgiveness that was shown by Hazrat Yusuf  (AS).  We get to learn about the struggles and the trials faced by the different prophets in their aim of spreading the word of Allah.

Then there was also the golden age of Muslims in which they excelled in the fields of science, medicine, and technology. Names like Ibn Sina and Ibn Al-Haytham are still remembered by people today. It’s time we took some inspiration and acquired knowledge from the past scholars to advance in science and technology today.

3). The Creation of a Muslim Identity and Character

Our character, our habits, our identity usually stem from our parents and immediate surroundings. When void of Islamic teachings and education we miss out on the values that need to be instilled in the light of Islam. If we were to acquire an Islamic education and teach our children of it, we would have examples like our Holy Prophet (PBUH) who had the best of the characters to emulate.

4). Life of Harmony

Studying Islam is bound to open up our minds to the world. People nowadays have a lot of judgment and resentment bottled up in them. There are a lot of misunderstandings between the different sects and factions of Islam. We are all ready to point fingers at each other without the knowledge of the origin. The only true judge is Allah and humans are nothing but His creation. Learning about Islam is bound to encourage harmony and unity among all.

Life of Harmony

These are just some of the reasons why gaining an authentic Islamic education is essential for all Muslims. Fortunately, in this day and age, we have numerous resources from which we can learn Islamic knowledge. However, it’s the individual’s responsibility to account for the credibility of the information.
