As Muslim we believe in the holiness of the Word of Allah (SWT), as well as its honor and virtue that surpasses the word of all others. We also believe that the Glorious Quran is the Speech of Allah, which no falsehood can approach, before it or behind it. Whoever speaks in accord with the Quran, has spoken the truth. Whoever judges according to it, has judged justly. Its devoted people are the people of Allah and His special people. Those who act upon it shall be successful and victorious both in this life and in the Hereafter. Those who turn away from it are the losers.
Excellence and Virtues of the Glorious Quran:
Our faith in the magnificence and greatness of the Holy Quran is increased by what has stated about it by our beloved Prophet (PBUH), the one who received its revelation, the best of creation, and the leader of humanity Muhammad (PBUH) who said:
“Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection interceding for its companions.” (Muslim 804).
And he (PBUH) said:
“The best of you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it.”(Al-Bukhari 5028)
This hadith outlines that the Holy Quran is the Word of Allah, and Allah’s Word has superiority over the words of humans just as the Creator has superiority and excellence over His creation; therefore, its learning and teaching is better and more virtuous than all other good and virtuous deeds.
He (PBUH) also said:
“Allah has His own people among mankind.” They (companions) said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, who are they?’ he said: “The people of the Quran, are Allah’s people and His closest servants.”(Ibn Majah 215)
The term “people of the Quran” means the reciters, the memorizers and the learners of the meaning of the Glorious Quran, in the light of the authentic Ahadith of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), as well as those who apply the teachings of the Quran in their daily lives, and also those who carry its message to others.
The importance of reciting the Noble Quran and acting on it:
Iman (Faith) is such a quality due to which the inner souls of humans become fragrant and enlightened. When a believer recites the Quran and acts upon it, his appearance is also enlightened and fragrant and it creates the atmosphere of light upon light; he is useful for himself as well as for others; he becomes honorable before Allah as well as among the people; he is like a palatable and sweet-smelling fruit. The example of which mentioned in the following narration of the Prophet (PBUH):
“The example of him (a believer) who recites the Quran (and acts on its commands) is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And he (a believer) who does not recite the Quran (but acts on its commands) is like a date-fruit which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who recites the Quran (and does not act on its commands) is like the Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who does not recite the Quran (not acts on its orders) is like the colocynth which tastes bitter and has no smell.” (Al-Bukhari 5020).
Manners for reciting the Holy Quran:
If anyone recites the Glorious Quran, he should adhere to the following Manners:
vHe should be in a state of purity and sitting in respectable manner.
vOne should recite it slowly, for that will help in understanding the Quran and contemplating it and this is how the Prophet (PBUH) used to recite.
vIt should not be finished less than three days. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “He who recites the Quran in less than three (days), he does not understand it.” (At-Tirmidhi 2949)
vWhile reciting the Holy Quran, one should fear Allah and show humility.
vOne should also beautify his voiceas much as he can while reciting the Glorious Quran. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever does not recite the Quran in a nice voice is not from us.” (Al-Bukhari 7527).
vA person should recite the Quran while thinking about and pondering over its meaning, with due respect and presence of mind, in order to understand its meaning and purport. Allah (SWT) says: “Do they not then think deeply in the Quran, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?” (Muhammad 47:24).
Quran is a revelation from the Lord of all that exists, not as the disbelievers and pagans say that it is magic, sorcery or poetry. Rather it is the absolute truth, wherein there is no doubt; there is none beyond it of useful truth. It is the basic source of Muslims’ faith and practice. It deals with all matters and concerns of human beings, it contains wisdom, Monotheism, worships (Ibadat) and laws; but its sole theme is the relationship between the Creator and His slaves. Moreover, it presents and provides guidelines for the members of a just society and a complete way of their lives, basic human attitude and etiquette and financial principles.
